No. You don't need a toad. We just did a 3k mile trip. Me, wife and two eight year olds. We did not have a toad. I was glad that I didn't have the hassle factor of a toad. The motorhome is much much more maneuverable without it. Without the toad I consider the motorhome to be a 36' minivan.
OTOH, we did not stay anywhere long. If we would have camped out for two weeks or so then, yes, I would have wanted another smaller vehicle.
Currently working on setting up a motorcycle carrier.
We won't be anywhere for long either. Max is 5 days before going to another location. The only place I might want to rent is rapid city and mount rushmore.
All the people talking about the benefits if the coach breaks down makes sense but leaves me questioning how often they break down!?
I agree that you don't 'need' a toad. And, as Bshpilot says, the toad comes in extremely handy if there is a break-down.
We have never broken down (also knocking on wood), we did have a hose failure leaking massive amounts of antifreeze. We were able to locate a Cummins shop about 60 miles away and rolled on it. I had to buy about 10 gallons of antifreeze at Target but it got us there without a roadside breakdown.
When we rented a coach before deciding to purchase, we had to rent a car as none of our vehicles were set-up for towing. It was difficult at times to find a rental. Don't expect Enterprise to pick you up, that is not a guarantee. Once, they could not pick us up at all (short handed) and another time they were very delayed. Another time, we couldn't find a car rental company (small town).
So, I would always have a tow vehicle. Sometimes, we'll travel for three or more days and not even unhook the toad.... it's there if needed.
