As an ex-cop I would think that you would know better and also have heard about what has happened when an unattended fuel nozzle did NOT shut off automatically.
In many states, the "hold on" latches have been removed so you have to hold the nozzle. I have seen some idiots stick their fuel cap in to the nozzle to keep the fuel running so they do not have to hold it. I take what I do around dangerous things very seriously, just like I do when I pre-flight my airplane. I also make my wife exit the RV before I fuel it.
