More and more I see local wood only due to pests. If you look at the higher elevations of the Smokies you will see what a beetle can do to a forest.
Unfortunately, I've seen campgrounds charge $7 for 4-5 pieces of extremely dry wood that burns in 30 minutes. I try to find firewood from a local grocery store or other source if I'm going to be more than a night. If it's $5 for a bundle large enough for one night, I buy from the campground. I give leftovers to neighbors when I leave to not transport the wood out of the area.
