I was in Nevada once, and was in a gas station. They did not have a vapor recovery station like has been used in California for many years (since the 80's). The gas station stinks when no vapor recovery system is used, and as such it can reach a lower explosion level. Especially with the older cars in the 50's. After a few cars blew up, they started posting 'shut off engines'.
Diesel trucks do not have the same problem. And if you shut off your engine just after getting off the freeway, the turbocharger will be really warm, and need that oil to cool it down for about 3-4 minutes. Your engine is about 30 feet from the fuel filler. It does not have spark plugs. So you can leave it idle for 3-4 minutes if you just got off the freeway safely. I would shut it off just to save a little fuel. Most big rig drivers are not buying their own fuel, it is the company fuel.
Nowdays there are timers on diesel trucks (at least out west) and they shut off the engine if it has not moved in a short time (say 2 minutes). This has been a problem at my work, where the trash truck driver is picking up 10 recycling bins, and the engine shuts off mid-way through a pick up. He actually needs to move the truck after 5 minutes, or the engine shuts off.
