Do you turn off your engine at the gas station?

I once had to refuel a diesel after a lazy driver ran it dry. I had a small amount, enough to get it started and to the service station. The clerk would not let me refuel with the engine running, provincial law,and shut the pump off. I shut it down, filled the tank, then spent 15 minutes bleeding the system again. Customers behind me were perturbed to say the least.
