I might be able to help you with this.  My dad had a 1978 Southwide with  the 440 that acted the same way that you're describing.  I fought that MH for a couple of summers until I found the solution. After changing the batteries, carb and fuel pump, plugs and wires....I found the problem to be electrical.
On his unit there was an battery isolator mounted to his firewall and when I removed it, I found that it was melted on the back side.  It looked fine until I removed it.  Once that was replaced it ran great.
