Does the engine alternator charge house batteries?

Now that everyone agrees it should charge the batteries please note that an Alternator should not be used as the primary charging system for a large bank of batteries. If you have been boon docking then running the generator is your best choice to refill them. Most folks don't follow that suggestion and many pay for it with a new alternator sooner than necessary.
