Does the engine alternator charge house batteries?

Thanks, guys. My preliminary look at the engine revealed two things:

1) I do not see the serial number on top, or on the sides, of the engine, as I would expect
2) I do not see the exhaust brake, and I think that the engine has compression brake.

As this stuff is safety critical, I want to be sure that I know how it works.
