Well that pretty well clears everything up.
I'm not an expert on 4wd by any means, but I tow a 2008 Jeep JK 4 down and I previously towed a 4wd Scout.
The Scout had to be towed 4 down with the front hubs locked and the transfer case in neutral in order to provide lubrication to the transfer case gears. Something to do with the rear drive output was higher than the front drive and wouldn't get adequate lubrication without the front shaft turning. The alternative was to disconnect the rear drive shaft.
The Jeep I just have to put the transfer case in neutral and tow away. I'm not sure, but I think the same thing applies here as far as lubrication.
I used to tow a 2wd Ranger pick up with a 5spd and I just put it in neutral and towed it 4 down. I don't know, but it would seem I could have towed it 2 down the same way.
I also had an Infiniti QX4 that couldn't be towed because of the 4wd system. I believe it had to do with the electronics in the system.
Don't know if this helps, don't take it as gospel and I'm sure smarter people will chime in. There is also the towing forum that maybe of more help.
