I appreciate all of the comments, But I am still at a loss as to why a vehicle could be towed on all fours but not on just two wheels? Unless it has something to do with the electronics and transmission lubrication. I can not fathom any instance where a front wheel drive car could not be towed on a dolly. The front wheels are the only ones that are connected to the engine or transmission in any way. I am curious though as to why a manual transmission that you shift into neutral could not be towed either four down or on a dolly as long as it was in neutral. The 4wheel drive thing makes sense but if you could put it into neutral also then wouldn't your transmission be technically disconnected from the drive lines? Some correct me please if my thinking is wrong. Thanks
Front wheel drive cars that can't be towed on a dolly are ones with low ground clearance. For example I have a Mercedes C250. It is a rear wheel drive car, but assuming it was a front wheel drive, it couldn't be put on a dolly because of the lack of ground clearance. Or I guess it could be put on a dolly, but you would have to expect scratches and damage to various parts of the vehicle. I also can't put snow chains on it because of lack of clearance. So it's not a vehicle to own if you live at South Lake Tahoe.
As to 4x4's being towed either four down or on a trailer, that has been explained by several on here and it's also clearly explained in the owners manual of the vehicles. But if you don't believe it then feel free to go ahead and do it. It's your vehicle, you can do with it as you wish.
