Back in the day when cars had carburetors, I did a check once and tried different grades of fuel in my Camaro and checked my MPG over quite a few tank fulls. I don't remember my exact numbers, but I did get better MPG with the high octane fuel and my math showed I could actually save a few pennies by running high octane based on the better MPG. I have never repeated by experiment with a fuel injected car. However, I have got gas outside of California and Nevada, and I've noted about a 10 percent increase in MPG using non-California gas. My toad (Which is a Dodge Dakota with a V-8) jumped from an average of about 17 mpg, to over 20 mpg using gas I bought in other states.
