I would probably look to buy a gas shock, rather than a generic screen door damper/closer. A gas shock will be smaller and look more modern. I would suggest mounting it at the bottom in the step well, as close to the floor as possible, just for looks. You will probably need to buy a short piece of angle iron to mount if to the side of the steps, so it can pivot the right direction.
