Have only seen triple tow done behind fifth wheels in limited states. Triple tow is not allowed at all in Washington state. I suspect the same is true many more places.
cagtkins,
He's not asking about TRIPLE towing. He's asking about DOUBLE towing. Triple is with THREE trailers, not two.
Now, if the OP knows EXACTLY where it's legal to tow, TWO TRAILERS BEHIND A MOTORHOME, with all the parameters met, then if he knows it, then the LE of any particular state he travels in, should ALSO know what's legal and what's not. LE or PD usually don't like being corrected on vehicle operations when they pull someone over for what they think is illegal.
But, if one has researched all the details of what's involved in double towing with a motorhome, and, has all the needed documentation on parameters (i.e. brakes, break-a-ways, weights, whatever) on each and every state they plan on traveling in or through, then one simply proceeds and will be able to handle any LE that might stop and question them.
There are occasions where LE is not totally informed of all driving/towing scenarios out there, even in their own state. In cases like that, when an officer stops you, and states why they stopped you, and it's for "double towing" and it's illegal, then you have the ammo to throw at them, (documentation) and say, "Officer, it states right here, in YOUR states motor vehicle laws and regulations, that I can do it, and here's why". Again, most LE don't like being corrected in situations like that but, there's absolutely nothing they can do about it. If they're wrong, they're wrong, period.
Now, there's also plenty of times when "Interpretation" is at stake here. Just how we, the RVing public interpret certain driving scenarios, and or what it states in a certain states motor vehicle laws and regulations manual, vs what an LE interprets them as, can be different. What to do in those kinds of scenarios, not a clue.
