drain leaking in 2015 Winnebago

Just in case anyone else faces this issue. I developed a leak from the area under the hot water heater on my 2015 Winnebago Sightseer 35G. As I am sure you all know the actual spot of a drip or stream is not always the source of the leak and after checking the water was not from the hot water heater. Shower is above so we checked all the possible connections but no success. Then we checked the drain and sure enough the drain pipe that fits into the J pipe and secured with a slip nut was too short and had pulled out. Every time we took a shower the water would run down over the freshwater tank and work its way to the edge of the coach below the hot water heater. Fixed now by placing a new pipe about 1 inch longer in the drain. I am posting in case this part is the same in all of this model and this problem could be in your future. Perhaps it was just cut to short and the problem is unique to my coach.

  • I did check the pressure relief valve and other things when the first drips appeared outside. First I checked the hot water heater as the drip was under it. My initial thought was I had not tightened the drain plug on the Atwood heater as it was drained for the cold November. Dry as could be. Then I thought perhaps the on/off switch for the shower sprayer was causing blow back. That had been a problem on another coach where the fastener was not quite tight. It did not leak until the flow was stopped. I removed the drawers and checked for water on the lines and nothing. I also reached under the pan and found no problem. Ironically the fitting had settled back in so was fine. We then traveled and it dripped again. This time we took the panel off and could see the fitting was out and from the length it was clear that it could move in and out with a little bump. We could have gone months. So the leak was inside so to speak as the water ran on to the fresh water tank and down on to the compartment containing hot water heater and found its way out between the decorative panel and hot water heater panel. When we were not moving some water sat in pockets on the compartment or tank and when we ran the washer and it would spin and shake a little it would move these pockets and drip. Of course that created feeling that washer was the issue so I also checked everything connected to washing machine-my first. This is why I posted as that short pipe could have continued to look ok if we had not been lucky and saw it when it had popped out. Thanks for the suggestions. I got a little smarter over this one. A long way to go.

Check the pressure relief valve on the water heater. At times it will "weep" water out when the heater is operating and is caused by not having an air head in the tank. To cure the problem turn the water off at the campground connection and open the pressure relief valve by lifting the handle then open a hot water faucet in the coach. When the water stops coming out of the valve the water level in the heater is at the correct level. Close the pressure relief valve and the faucet in the coach and turn your water back on. Should be OK now. I need to do this procedure every 6 months or so.

This would not cause an interior leak. The water will leak outside. Doug

  • Nice catch.
Different situation but I have found that one of the most common reasons for a shower drain leaking is because someone used plumbers putty with a plastic shower pan. (Silicone is the right product for that application).
