dual rear axles -pros / cons

I hope I am putting this in the proper place.

I am looking to buy my first motor home and I have seen some units with dual rear axles.

Can somebody explain to me why some have this and are there any pros or cons related to this set up.

thanks!

  • I haven't driven a gas motorhome with a tag axle, but rear diesels with a tag axle have a significantly smoother ride in the rear than a non-tag axle.
  • Well....... It's true that in most cases on lighter Gas Motor Homes with the tag axle, it is there to add capacity that was lacking in the chassis as it came from Ford or Workhorse BUT it also adds a lot of lateral stability and an extra set of brakes while doing that.

The bounder we have is an odd beast. It is a 1998 home on the 1999 chassis. I'm guessing that because it was a transition year for the Ford F53, they still put a tag axle on it even though it had the newer 20,500lbs chassis. I haven't see any of the 36s 1999 and up that had the tag axle. The benefit is that I get an additional 1,000lbs of cargo capacity and the stability from the extra wheels on the ground. The downside of course is that I have 2 more tires to replace when time comes.

I wouldn't advise you to stay away from an older gas motorhome just because it had the tag axle.

If you will look at his six posts... it appears he's interested in a gasser. If he'd been on here for a year then comments about not liking the other answers might be OK.
RetiredH assuming you are looking at gas MHs then I'd recommend staying away from those that have a tag axle... to many other units with bigger tires and bigger frames designed for a bigger house.
  • dubdub07, The picture of your coach looks like a sixty foot coach. It should have three axles. LOL

The pros you got more carry capacity. It also helps stabilize on cross winds.

The cons, you have two extra tires to buy.

If you have a coach over 42'long, you have to have it.

Weight. Some 45 footers are very heavy and the axle to the rear is a tag. It can be lifted for tight turning. The real deal is just weight. If the real axle weight is exceeded, then a tag is needed.
