E-Series TorqShift Transmission Fluid & Filter Change

Anyone know how often (how many miles) the TorqShift trans fluid & filter should be changed in an E350/E450 motor home while towing a 4200 pound vehicle most of the time?

Does the E-series TorqShift transmission take Mercon V or SP? Something in my head says my 2007 E350 requires SP.

My trans filter has the earlier bell jar design. I bought a trans filter from AutoZone. It has a hollow cardboard core and white material around it. The filter resembles a roll of toilet paper. I found a picture on line here.....strange.

My trans filter housing looks like this.

  • I planned on 30,000. I keep an eye on the color and smell of the fluid. New fluid has a characteristic sweet smell and it gets more sharp as it ages.

So 30K max for and maybe less depending on my unscientific judgement of the fluid condition. You could probably pull a sample and send it for analysis in doubt-I usually don't I just change it and be done with it.

bobistheoilguy forums has a transmission fluid section. Personally I'm going to stick with Ford spec fluid for this transmission-these days the OEM fluids are very good.
  • I would check with Ford I had a Ford dealership do mine at 30,000 miles just changed the external at that time. I sold my 05 Ford but read on the one forum they changed the recommended fluid.

  • Probably just me...I follow what the manufacture says.

http://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenance/owner-manuals/ and use only Motorcraft parts when ever possible, even though many times price is high IMO

And I checked the "towing" box in above link being it doesn't say "RV".

And some things I would do early and not wait for schedule, example: 99,000 miles for plug change is nuts IMO

But overall found print out to be very helpful in the scheme of maintenance schedule.
  • Ford calls for transmission and filter change at 30,000 miles. I have a 2007 model E-450 with the V-10. First change I had a local shop do at 27,000. At 47,000 (20,000 miles) I did it myself. Since I did not change the fluid in the torque converter I plan to change it after 20,000 more miles. The early change also should help with extreme service such as towing. It took 11 quarts to fill it up after changing. Try to measure what you get out and start with that going back. I will take more than you measure due to spillage and fluid in the filters.
The original change on mine was by a Ford truck shop and they used Mercon LV fluid. I went to another dealer when I did mine and they also specified Mercon LV. Reading on the Ford forum, that is correct as the SP has been discontinued.
You have two filters. The one shown in your picture and a more conventional on inside the transmission pan. Naturally I would change both.
I hope this helps and answers your questions.

  • With just 16,000 miles on our 2012 E350 Class C I changed out the trans fluid and went with pure synthetic. After 3,000 additional cross country miles I am pleased to report that the trans fluid temps are consistently 10 degrees cooler.... (Yes, I have ScanGauge), which is a good thing!
