E450 front suspension question

I picked up my new 2006 Tioga today with the E450 chassis. I drove it about 150 miles and it handled much better than I thought it would. It was very stable on the highway at high speeds. No sway, steering tight, and it was unaffected by anything passing.

When I got home I noticed two small shock absorbers crossed on the front end just behind the front stabilizer bar. Anyone know if these are original or did this have an upgrade to the front end? It was a trade in and the dealer did not know. I know they made changes to the front of the E450s in 2007 or 2008 to improve handling but I don't have any idea if what I have on my 2006 is original or not.

Is your 2006 Tioga really mounted atop a 2005 E450 cutaway??
    If so,
Was your dealer aware of an issue brought up in Technical Service Bulletin TSB 05-1-1? "Some" 1998-2005 Fords were affected.
Fortunately, not mine & hopefully, not YOURS.

The TSB about tower cracks also includes 2006 and 2007 models!

Damper might last longer if you add a Boot to it. Boot covers the Rod and helps protect it from stone chips that compromise the seal surface.

I call what you have a "Damper" because all it does is resist sudden movement. Some call it a "Stabilizer" but I don't, unless the device has some form of centering mechanism, usually springs.

I sure wouldn't fuss with alignment if it drives as well as you say. Well, maybe if it turns out to have a lot of tire wear...

It'd be interesting to see if it's been aligned using Offset or Adjustable Upper Balljoint Bushings. Looking down at the upper balljoint (from over the tire)...
...if the stub of the balljoint is centered in the Bushing, then it's an OEM bushing
...if the stub is off center in the bushing, then it's an Offset bushing
...if the stub is off center between two concentric parts of the bushing then it's an Adjustable bushing like Ingalls 59400 (but there are other brands)

What the Bushings do, is allow alignment of an RV as essentially a fully loaded truck as opposed to an empty truck.

My guess is somebody aligned it with some form of offset/adjustable bushings and that allowed the CASTER angle to be set on the high side of the adjustment range.
  • OK, I was wrong. There is only one 1 steering dampner on my front end. Not going to mess with it though as it handles fine just the way it is. I will check out the TSB as my chassis appears to be a late 2005.
  • Only 1 steering dampner on my 07 E-450. I changed it out with a Bilstein unit when I went with Bilstein shocks. What an improvement.

  • Thanks, I'm pretty sure it was two so I'll take a look tomorrow and post a photo.

Typically the E450 has a single "steering damper" that looks like a shock absorber on the front. Not two, so I think yours has been modified. Would like to see a picture if you can arrange that.
