I would think that once the tape is installed it will prevent UV light from destroying the sealant and the roof will be very secure for many years. I was thinking 2" along the sides and 4" over the top ends just like suggested by many of you.

For uv protection, I put white gorilla tape over my cured sealant. It was very quick and easy to apply and was inexpensive. Not sure how long it will last, but in my mind it does not have to last very long, as for now I plan to remove it to inspect the joint 2-3 times a year.
