Extended Safety Cables

By the time I hook up my Brake Buddy and my Blue-Ox tow bar my toad is right at 7' behind the coach. Currently I'm using the 10,000 lb safety cable that stretches out to the 7' with no slack. I would like to have a little more slack in the cables as they rub against the tow bar and have rubbed some of the black coating off the cable. I haven't been able to locate any coiled cables that are longer, so I'm looking at making my own. Is there any reason to use cables over chains? What have you guys with same configuration done to solve the problem? Thanks for the feedback.

  • My mistake. It measures 6'. I forgot to mention that I have a drop down receiver that adds a foot. One foot for the drop down, one foot for the Brake Buddy, and 4 feet for the tow bar. The Blue Ox cables are still stretched to the max. I have the chain mending links but I wasn't sure about their durability or strength when matched with the cables.
  • Blue ox has 2 lengths the longer one lets you put a bike rack on your bar
  • Just wondering why your out seven feet. Mine's at about 5'.

Depending on how much slack you wish, Even just a couple of chain mending links may do the job (Those links are on the ends of that Demco 12" extension cable.)
  • Mine isn't anywhere near that long, but I just switched from chains to cables, and hope to never have to go back. Lighter, easier to hook up, and much easier to store.

I'm sure you can make you're own cables...just not sure of the implications should anything happen?

  • Put chafe guard on either the cables or the bar itself.
