Ez pass locations

We have a class a diesel and are having problems with the ez pass being read on the windshield. Does anyone have any suggestions for placement or tips on where it should go to be read. It reads sometimes and not others. Ez pass customer service says it's the placement. We've tried upper windshield, middle windshield nod lower windshield all in the center of the window.
  • Guess I'm lucky: NJEZPass. 1 for the motorhome (category able to tow another vehicle)1 for my pickup (also category to tow another vehicle)1 for my car,and 1 for my motorcycle.
NEVER a problem that I'm aware of.
All I have to do is remember to remove the EZPass transponder from the vehicle I'm towing. (Toad).
Only "downside" with NJEZPass is it costs a buck a month for the account.

Not to loud, if NY hears about the dollar a month fee we will have one also.
  • I will admit that I am dead set against ever getting EzPass, however with the tollization of certain high occupancy lanes and other issues. I am bending, somewhat. My question is, with a Class A and toad, how does this work? I've looked just a little bit on line, seems New Hampshire may be the cheapest place to buy. But do I need two? and what if one time I tow and the next I don't? Do I need two different units for the Bus? Do I use one in the bus and one in the car and they read each?

in many places you'll pay a lower toll with the transponder than if pay with cash. and EZ Pass is now compatible with the Illinois iPass. the Illinois iPass is free. I'd suggest that you contact iPass and see if you qualify for one as you're out of state.

as for us, we have a single iPass in our RV while towing our Jeep. we've been thru almost all of the states that use the EZ pass system and have never had our iPass rejected and as far as I can tell the correct tolls have been deducted from our account.
  • I too "fought" EZPass. Then..about 4-5 years ago,on our annual trip up the N.E.Extention (part of the Pa. Turnpike) they set up 2 toll booths with the absolute insanity of design that only a gov't could come up with.
That was it. After going thru these two booths twice (up and back) it was then that I decided to go with EZPass (NJ).
Of course, EZPass itself could be turned into a Big Brother thing (kinda popular today, eh?) and start giving out speeding tickets, and if that ever happens I would strongly consider giving up EZPass.
  • In a pass life did parking access control using transponders, both active and passive, hand held cards and such. If you are having problems the first thing to check is how transparent your windshield is for radio frequencies. Some glass manufactures included metals in the glass as a tinting agent. About the only way I ever found to field check was to look at the glass in sun light with polarized sun glasses. Pinkish tint glass was always a nogo. Other way was to research the manufacture of the glass and contact them. Had problems with Mercedes, GM mini vans and a few other GM products. Only option was a license plate transponder. Never ran into a Bentley but read that you can't use a cell phone inside the vehicles because of the window tint and metal body blocks all signals.

With class C rigs the overhead bunk is going to be a problem blocking the line of sight and you'll need a license plate tag.
  • Our free NY issued E-ZPass is mounted in the lower left side of the windshield on the coach. That's where the previous owner had his, so I just used the tabs he left. On our previous coach, I installed the E-ZPass in the upper center of the windshield, just below the tint line. Both locations have been trouble free for reading so far. We have two transponders for the coach, one for when we're towing the toad, and one without. Both are registered to our NY Thruway Motorhome Plan where we get charged passenger car per axle rates for the coach, instead of the higher large vehicle rates. We pay no monthly or annual fees for our automatic replenishment account.
  • Ditto...For Class C, it was hit/miss so switched to license plate one few years ago and never have issue. Got from NY since free and no monthly charges. You do not need a NY address. Just remove ezpass from our tow vehicle and keep in the special bag EZPASS provides so don't get double charged.
  • Have the pass from Ma. and had to get two. One is for the MH not towing anything and the other is for having a toad attached. Then the other pass goes into the foil bag so it can't be read by the reader.
