Back when I went to engr school before the advent of calculators, we used M to designate thousands. Along the way folks also used K to designate thousands. The change was probably driven by the need to use metric units and M would be confused by meter M, milli meter MM. K did not readily match up with any metric unit of measure so was considered better.
The neat thing about pre calculator math using a slide rule was that you paid a lot of attention to decimal point so your std of wrongness was a factor of ten. Young folks with todays computors can be off by a M or a K without realizing the difference.
Bottom line the air filter on my motor home gets dirtier fast and needs changing more often
