When to change the filter is very subjective. Are you driving it on gravel roads or asphalt? Back in 1989 I was working in eastern Washington and the very fine and highly abrasive Mt. Saint Helens volcanic ash was so bad the farmers put their tractor engine air cleaners on long stacks high off the ground to help keep from sucking ash. We were changing air filters on our equipment every few days and that may not have been often enough.
So much depends on ambient conditions that I don't believe there is a right answer to the question.
