Dropping the pan, checking for and cleaning debris and then replacing the filter is the most important part of changing the fluid which is not necessary at 9k miles unless you suspect contamination or have drivability issues. Failing to change 100% of the fluid is nonsense unless the fluid is contaminated or overheated. If you have excess debris in the transmission pan at 9k miles, (regardless of the years) you have or are headed for problems. Small amounts of metal and paper clutch shavings in the pan is normal and expected.
Now the real question. What is a small amount and what is excess debris? Only experience will tell. If your transmission is operating normally, clean it out at the specified service interval, replace the lost fluid, and be done with it. Check it again in 30,000 miles and then you will have a better idea of what "normal" is for you. (it varies with everyone depending on duty/use)
