Engineered studs and decking are made from recycled plastic and are (at least here) very expensive compared to real wood) and yes they are heavy. To lighten them a bit they shape them so they use less material. I looked at redoing our deck and the cost was a lot more then preserved wood. It was built w preserved wood and after 10 years still looks good. I wanted to do the rest of the deck as originally planned and thought about replacing the preserved wood. In the end I used the real wood.
