I see a lot of black paint under this thing. I wonder what it is? Maybe oil based paint or stain? I wouldn't mind finding some of it to do the exposed parts.
Back in the 70's it was really popular to have the vehicles undercoated. I can't remember what the name of the one I used:h (actually, they installed it at a shop), but it was supposed to make the chassis last longer. It basically looked like it was painted with tar, but it dried, and wasn't effected by the heat. Man, I wish I could remember the name of the stuff....this getting old stuff sucks!:S
My guess, that is what you are looking at on the bottom of the chassis. You can buy spray-cans of "undercoating", and then do some touch-up when you have everything completed. It's probably not as tough as those rhino-liner sprays, but it should do the trick.
Hope you had a good weekend camping....it might be the last one of the season....you've got this project to carry you through the winter...if you are able to bear with the weather....:M
Keep up the good work....
I think your were thinkng about "ZIEBART" rustproofing and undercoating.
One big flaw with the Tar based undercoating is that over time it would dry out and crack. The cracks would alow moisture in and it would be trapped and cause rust that was hidden to the eye. Thats why to keep the Ziebart warranty in taqct you had to return the vehicle to Ziebart every 12 months for them to power wash and inspect for loose cracked areas and recoat.
Ziebart had a wax based coating they applied to inner door panels for sound proofing and thos did not have the drawbacks that the tar based undercoating had.
