Looking to get a blue ox tow bar how much trouble is it to install the parts on a jeep wrangler camping world wanted like 3500 bucks don't see where it is maybe I am missing something any input thanks
just installed a blue ox baseplate on my 2011 Wrangler...couple of hours & 4 drilled holes.....I also installed their wiring kit...does not use the toad's electrical system at all.4 conductor wire & additional light socket for each taillight......I ran the wire thru the frame rail for most of the length of the Jeep
You didn't mention "which jeep"? We tow a 2000 wrangler TJ. $52 for a set of roadmaster tow bar brackets that I bolted to a 1/4" steel plate aftermarket bumper... No sweat.
I didn't want to mess with it when I had my Jeep Liberty so I took it to the body shop at my local Jeep dealer. They don't have a price list in their books for it, so they looked at the instructions and gave me a price to install it. If my memory is correct I think the body guy figured 2 hours time so it cost me $150 to have them install it. The local RV dealer wanted $1100. The body man at the Jeep dealer had never installed one before, but I fully trusted him with the install.
Was that $3500 the price for Parts (Brake Buddy (or equivalent), tow bar, base plate, wiring kit, etc.) and Installation? If so, even that seems at least $1000 too high for what they're giving you. As other posters have mentioned, the only real installation involved is putting on the base plate and installing the wiring kit on the Toad. I'd shop around for the best deal on the parts and then install it yourself or get help from a local mechanic.
Boy the instructions from Blue Ox is right on. Just follow them and you will not any a problem. I just did mine on 2013 Rubicon Unlimited. I still have to do the lights. But I have a few things on the S&B house that I need to do first.
Don't know where Camping World gets their prices from either. Didn't cost me any $3500, but then I did not go to Camping World. My neighbor runs a body shop and has installed many baseplates on vehicles of all kinds.
BTW: I would not put a blue Ox towbar on, assuming you are getting a braking system as well. Take a look at ReadyBrute integrated towbar and braking system from Nightshift Auto. Its a great system that works well and it will save you a ton of money.
BTW: cost should around 1200 bucks including braking system. It is the only closed loop, fully proportional system on the market. Here is the link: http://www.readybrake.com/tow-bars.html
Greg1, Jeep Wranglers are without a doubt, the easiest to install any form of a base plate. Talk about basic, it doesn't get any more basic than that. We've towed seven different Jeep Wranglers, of almost all years and models, with the exception of a JK and I've never installed any base plates due to the fact that I've always built custom bumpers for off roading etc. and, they always included tow bar brackets.
But, if you're not up to the task, there's "jeepers" all over the planet, and I'm sure there's some near you. You could enlist their help for a bottle of suds (Shawshank Redemption) and, you'd have it done in about an hour. Good luck. Scott
