Truly it varies agent to agent on questions and confiscation and what is the problem flavour of the year/month. We've crossed back and forth on average two or three times a year for 15 years.
Years ago couldn't take raw chicken, another year offered to let us pull over and hard boil all our eggs they couldn't be raw, another year confiscated our handful of grapes we were eating instead of sweets enroute. Another year confiscated our M&M's beef lasagne Last year confiscated our two whole tomatoes and afterwards said if they were sliced we'd have been OK to keep them. Go figure.
Generally speaking in most recent years we have taken over and disclosed having a cooked chicken with us for supper/sandwiches and mayonnaise, butter, bread etc to make sandwiches, some canned goods, and also bacon, sausage, eggs for a cooked breakfast first day. Then later on that next day we do a big shop to stock up for our preferred boon docking locations.
So latest was Tomatoes, Grapes, Citrus Fruits, were NO NO's and Dog Foods depending what types/origin and must be in original packaging.
Generally speaking crossing Sweetgrass/Coutts AB, Quebec Crossings we've had no problems in both directions. Osoyoos and other BC and Sask' crossings we've always had a harder time getting across, maybe because they are less busy? Who knows, but they are the only ones we've been pulled over for searching.
