Front wheel bearings while towing

Hi all
I have been towing a Ford Explorer Sport Trac and have had 2 front wheel bearings go out in a couple weeks of each other. I wonder if towing the 4wd causes stress on the bearings around turns. Have any one else had problems with their Explorer wheel bearings while towing? It is a tough trying to change them in a campground.
Let me know

  • Ford Explorer front wheel bearings have a high failure rate, under normal driving conditions. I don't think towing had anything to do with it. Some were found to have little or no Lube. Ford almost had a recall. There is a service bulletin.
Replaced front bearings and rear bearings and seals on DD's Explorer. (1 Front bearing failed so replaced both. Rear bearing seals leaked, so replaced both) So far so good.
  • What year sport trac? Explorers from 2002 to 2010 eat thru wheel bearings front and rear in normal driving
  • I would be checking your setup. Make sure the towbar is very close to level.
  • First instance I have heard of wheel bearing problems in a toad. Tell me how you are towing. What tow bar? What procedures are you following when you are setting up your Explorer to tow?
