Frost build up in freezer

Yes, I have to defrost mine even in AZ.

For 4 months, I'd say that's pretty normal. The back wall of the freezer is where the cold is so the accumulation will be there.

So just leave it until we get back home and then I will turn it off. That is in about 2 months. It doesn't affect the operation at all?

YES, it does affect refrigerator operation-- ice is an excellent insulator and diminishes the heat transfer from freezer to coils.

I would defrost it now and then again in two months.

The ice maker (presence of water in the freezer) does lead to ice build up-- perfectly normal.

In two months you'll have enuf ice in there to cover the north pole. Adsorption refrigerators have to be manually defrosted from time to time. Easiest way I found is to empty the freezer compartments...Using a turkey baster and hot water, liberally plaster the walls. Once the ice melts enough to remove, toss it out then use a couple dish towels to mop up the excess water. Dry it well and put your stuff back in the freezer. DONE!.....your fridge will run more efficiently and gvie you better service.....Dennis

A long time ago, someone suggested putting plastic cutting sheets in the back of the freezer. The ice will then buildup on the cutting sheet, which is easily removed when flexed. the ice will break off and then you can put the cutting sheet back on the back freezer wall. I only have to defrost the rest of the freezer maybe once every 6 to 8 months. Give it a try.

Easiest way to defrost is to place a towel in the bottom of the freezer & start waving a hair dryer at the ice build up.
Do it right & the ice will come out in large pieces.

That's sounds like a good idea. I did use hot water and melted the frost. Then sopped up the water with towels. Only took about 10 minutes with no need to empty the other freezer or frig.

Drain tube.

Any time a self-defrosting freezer does not seem to be defrosting correctly, the 1st thing I do is suspect a blockage in the drain tube. Ice builds up in the drainage tube, not allowing the condensation a place to escape.

Emptying & thawing out the freezer normally does the trick to clear the ice blockade. SOMETIMES, simply pouring a bit of HOT water into the drainage tube will also do the job. A piece of wire can be used to help dislodge the blockage, but be VERY VERY careful not to poke a hole in the tube.

With a residential/commercial freezer, a quick check of the drain pan can varify the problem (a dry dusty pan is not draining correctly). Obviously, this will not work with a unit that has no pan...and many RV fridges just drain outside.

Self-defrosting absorption freezer compartment-- sorry never seen one.
