Assuming the truck is in good shape, a 5th wheel will be much cheaper. Really surprising that with a 42ft 5er, you need to bunk the kids in a converted closet. I assume it's heavily geared towards a retired couple.
I would start looking at toy hauler 5th wheels. Friends have one in the 40-45ft range. Master bedroom up front, above the back of the main living room is a loft area that could sleep 1 or 2 who can climb and then the back has beds that come down from the ceiling and can be converted to a dinning table (ie: school room). They carry a couple of big touring bikes but a UTV and a dirt bike or two would fit. I think they paid something like $79k for it new 3-4 years ago, so a fraction of the cost of a MH and specialty trailer.
The only real downside is if you plan to be on the move several days in a row. To get the beds in the garage set up, you need to remove the toys. If it's just occasionally with week or more stays most of the time, you could bunk the kids in the main living room on those days and when you are in place for more than a night or two, you pull the toys out.
If you give up on the toys, there are tons of bunk house layouts that could easily accommodate.
Besides what I mentioned when I replied to wanderingaimlessly, there is also the fact that when we have another baby our truck wont be able to accommodate us all. We would have to find a truck with a front bench and I'm thinking that would most likely also limit us on lower level trim packages, which may be ok but I like my cooled/heated leather seats and the built in DVD player for the kids.
