No, you could put a "smaller" more efficient isb type engine (maybe smaller) for the generator instead of an ISL or even larger engines in a prevost. Then for acceleration and hills you would tap a large battery bank for on demand high HP. Similar to many hybrid cars for sale today.
Basically friegtliner has to design a hybrid chassis people would want.
The main complain about hybrids in California is that the battery boost has limited capacity. It will help on 1/2 mile grade, but we do have several grades in 7 to 25 miles long.
20 years ago I did own couple of motorhomes that would take those grades at 25mph.
Not something I would look forward in new technology.
