Solar would be the way to go! I thought I knew a lot about solar in RV's until I went to Quartzsite, AZ. those people down in the Desert bring a new meaning to battery and solar power! I encourage you to take a trip down that way!
Ugg... Sure don't need Quartzsite for that...
Thie summer, I filled my roof with solare panels, Six 150 watt panels, filling every square foot that wasn't all ready filled with an air conditioner, fantastic fan, or antenna.
I paid real close attention to shadows.
I wired the panels in 3 pairs to reduce the shadow effect.
I used a real expensive MPPT controller.
I can in fact, at noon on a sunny day in the summer, get a real SIXTY amps into the batteries.
As long as the sun shines, I can sit anywhere and not need my generator.
Unless it get's hot. The roof is full and it won't run the Air Conditioning.
Connected to motors, it would move the bus maybe 7 feet...
As has been said, diesel-electric, as in locomotives, is common and has been for a long time. It works because electric motors produce full torque at zero rpm, where gas or diesel engines need to rev up a bit to make any measurable torque.
But power is power. It's not free, no matter what the internet says.
