Furnace smells

Went to run our furnace this morning and phew it stinks. Any suggestions. 2001 holiday rambler imperial.
  • Instead of new duct work call one of the cleaning services that advertise duck work cleaning.

They run a powerful vacuum hose into the ductwork. Very inexpensive and they might be able to tell you what they find in the ductwork.
  • If it is not coming out of other vents, you can rule out the furnace as the source of the odor.

And, assuming that the ducting does not have holes in it (where it could pick up odor under the bathroom for example) then there almost has to be something in the duct(s).

Depending on routing, it may be reasonable to just run new ducting-- no idea of a varmint lived in there for awhile and left its "scent".
  • Sorry, bad service where we are.

We've tried letting it run on high for a few hours, no change. We also opened the vents and cleaned the duct work, again no change.

We have pin pointed that the smell is only coming out of the back two vents in the rear of the motor home, in the bedroom.

The duct work runs under the bathroom, etc.

Finally, unfortunately, I can come up with a description of the smell. Nursing home, yuck.

This is a used 2001 holiday rambler imperial that we pi based a few months back.
  • Actually, since the OP has not returned, we have no idea what the "smell" is.
  • That sounds like the heat exchanger has a hole/crack, allowing exhaust fumes into the RV. I would not operate the furnace until the heat exchanger is removed and inspected for holes/cracks.

Can you define the odor a little more?
Burning wire? Dampness? Dead animal? Toilet room? Musty? Something you've never smelled before?
  • Hopefully it is just the dust and dirt that accumulared on it and in it since used last year and after used a time or two it ' s gone
  • Assuming this is not a "dead animal smell", but "hot machinery smell", let it run for 30 minutes. Turn it off. Air out coach. Run it again. Any smells?
