While those smells do indicate issues that should be investigated, everybody here has also missed the point that nothing good happens when an engine is run at idle and lots of bad things can happen.
You should never idle longer than it takes for the engine to stay running when it is put in gear. If you want your exhaust system to last, never short cycle the engine. If you want the engine to last, avoid going to wide open until the engine is at full operating temperature.
Those smells you are getting will also be more pronounced with low air flow, but that does not make them less dangerous.
