I was curious where the OP "turned around" but after looking on Google Maps, I see dirt crossovers every few hundred feet or more, some pretty decent looking ones too, west of Tonopah. Nothing like that here in the East, except a few "official use only" crossovers, probably too deep in the median to execute such a thing in a Motorhome.
I too would have done what OP did, but if possible, replaced both tires as the good one was run overloaded. (I see he eventually did replace the tires and looking at the shop on street view, the OP probably got the only tire that size he had).
This post speaks for using telescoping slide locks to keep the slides retracted, esp hydraulic ones. Mechanical ones are probably not as prone to creep.
