gen question

I have a forest river sunseeker class C, I run my gen set for test and it starts and runs fine. But when I turn on the ac nothing happens and the lights draw down on the battery. I checked the circuit brk at the gen set and seems ok. are there any other brk's I need to check????????

Thanks Dave

The breaker on the ONAN genny is different from the common Residential type used inside the RV. I think it's Magnetic and it feels different. Hard to tell if it's Off or you're switching it to ON. So after you cycle it a couple times, look carefully to make sure it's actually ON. The way it's positioned you may need a mirror to be sure.
  • When you check the breaker, don't just look at it, turn it off and on again. Some breakers look like they are on after they have tripped.

The breaker on the ONAN 4KY Micro series is an odd duck, too. I think it's a "magnetic" breaker while household/RV types are "thermal." They feel a lot different when you operate the magnetic, and I can't say I can tell which position is which. SO... have a mirror when you check it. Flip it a couple times then be sure you left it "ON."

  • 2013 Sunseeker will have an automatic transfer switch. There is a breaker on the generator itself that may be tripped. There is a slight chance the transfer switch has failed, but more likely a tripped breaker.
  • What year Sunseeker? Only in the past couple years have Forest River moved away from a special receptacle that your generator uses for power to an automatic transfer switch. I'd almost be certain the shore power needs to be plugged into the gen outlet.

If that isn't the case, check the breaker on the Onan generator itself. That might be tripped.

It is a 2013, I will have to recheck the circuit breaker again. It seems pretty flimsy but seemed ok. I don't see a special receptacle. If it ever gets nice out I will check again. Hope the rain and snow stops soon.

    Thanks Dave

  • What j-d said. Make sure your shore power cable is plugged into your generator outlet, if yours is set up that way.

Otherwise, your generator power is going nowhere. :)

Your coach needs to know it has power from your onboard genny instead of the shore tie plug-in. Some have ATS (Auto Transfer Switch) that does this as soon as it senses power from the genny. Well, in 20-30 seconds after the genny starts actually. BUT BUT BUT Many coaches have an outlet, like the one on a campground pedestal, powered by the genny. You have to plug the shore tie cable into that outlet. Then start the genny and you should have power to let you run the A/C, recharge your House Battery from the Converter/Charger etc.
Take a look in the compartment where your shore tie cable is stored and see if there's a box with a socket in it.
