I assume this is indeed a "gas" generator, not diesel. How long has it been since you ran it? If it has been awhile, could be related to the fuel breaking down and clogging the jets in the carb.
Try spraying some starter spray in the air intake and see if it will fire. If so, that indicates a fuel delivery problem. It could require a carb rebuild if "varnish" has built up from the stale fuel.
It could also be the float stuck in the carb. We had this problem after my parent's motorhome sat for a long time and the gen was never used. By tapping the carb bowl with the handle of a screwdriver while cranking it broke loose and began to let fuel flow.
We then put SeaFoam in the fuel and let it run for hours to clean out the carb. After that it started and ran just fine. Then we SOLD it!
If it won't fire when spraying starter spray in the intake, then you have another problem in the ignition - plugs, points, etc.
