Generator board fried?

Running my gen today and as we pull out of the driveway the generator shut down. The codes say it's a fault code. So I open the cover check things out, all looks good and when I try and crank again, I notice sparks and smoke coming out of the board and it shuts down again. Anyone ever have this issue? I assume the board need replaced. Guess I'll be calling onan.

  • With any luck this will just be a little glitch that, once repaired, will never happen again.

It's an onan qg 4000. They can't look at it locally for a week so will have to wait til after our current trip. Shore power is fine and surprisingly the dash air kept the coach fairly comfy on our 4 hour leg today. It's still under warranty so I will let them take care of it. Irritating though when you rely on equipment and it fails.
  • What generator? I know on some of them people have posted online exactly what components actually go bad so that the board can be repaired by changing out the bad items for usually less than $10. Here is one link but I don't know if it is the same generator you have. If you can't solder, there are a lot of shops that will do it for you for a few bucks. Board repair
