Check your battery connections. If you have an intermittent connection, it may not be charged but when it decides to connect then the battery(s) demands a big charge load.
That would also explain the inconsistent change over to inverter.
Inspect electrolyte levels while your at it.
The genset changes rpm to meet load requirements.
