Golden age of (class A) RVs

I am curious about what might be considered the golden age of RVs (class A, that is). By "golden", I don't imply old or best or highest tech. Although, I am not sure what that leaves or how to define it.

For example:

Slides became common in the 1990's and pretty much standard by 2000. Raised-rail, bridge, etc. chassis emerged in the early 2000's. Engines got some serious torque in the 2000's and became cleaner in the late 2000's. Recent engines are running clean and making serious power compared to older versions. Long RV's (over 40') are maybe not as desirable as shorter ones with 3 or 4 slides.

It is also curious that at about the same time engines had to meet new environmental restrictions (2007 & 2010) is when Cat left the business and the market crashed. How happy was Cat to avoid major development costs for a market that was about to pause for a couple of years.

So, what are your thoughts on when the golden age was (is) and what promoted it.

  • I think the golden age is subjective. Right now is as good a time in the industry as any. Wasn't there just a post recently on so many new RVers you can't even get into CG's? A few mfg's have been shaken out over the year but what remains is healthy & overall making decent products.
  • I would say the 1930s, you can't make advances in something until you have them. We didn't have a flush violet or a shower in our house until the '50s. House cars had running water, and much more, in the '30s.
  • For me, it's the early 80"s to the early 80's. They had class.

Slides - Mid station TV's - King Beds - Tile in lieu of Carpet - Full sized Showers - Full Paint - proper Engines - Willing to try new things -just Quality

Might narrow it down to 03-07 but could also expand it to be the entire decade 00-10.

    JMHO,
