What Doug said. When you use ratchet straps a lot of people pull all the slack out and then start ratcheting them tight. This doesn't put enough strap around the ratchet and causes them to slip. I used to be a loadmaster in the Air Force and we were required to make sure that there was 1 1/2 turns around the ratchet when using tie down straps.
