You want the straps to have an angle to them. The fronts should angle forward and out from the vehicle to the tiedown location. The rears should angle rearward and out from the vehicle to the tiedown location.
This pattern stops motion in all directions. If you have a tall vehicle, crossing gives the angle needed to stop sideways motion.
