I also like the suggestion of running the straps over the tire and cinching down the ratchets until it starts to compress the tires. It sounds like that would keep the straps tight even if they did stretch a bit.
I was a little concerned about squishing my tires down and leaving them that way for long periods so I showed what I was doing to my tire guy. He said no worrys on squishing them down a bit but don' t tighten them down so much that they flatten. I squish them down 1/2 an inch or so and them check them an hour down the road. I rarely have to tighten them, sometimes a little if they are wet. Make sure the straps go around and connect really close to the tire. This allows no rolling. Hope I am explaining that right.
