Headlights blinking randomly

Have a 2003 Holiday Rambler Endeavor. Both headlights will come on for 2 seconds then go out....then blink on & off randomly, every 2 sec to 10 sec. Fuse is in good shape. Owner's manual and Electrical Distribution Panel do not reference a relay for the headlights, so I'm assuming there isn't one. Headlight switch on dashboard is a plunger style. I've wiggled it around (while pulled back) & it doesn't affect the lights blinking on & off. Nor does the high beam lever on steering column affect the blinking. Any advice as to what could be the issue?

  • Does your switch look like this?

If yes, you have a 90's Ford headlight switch. The actual switch mechanism wear out, and causes this eventually. It's happened to me, and just about anybody else who has kept a 90's Ford truck long enough.

Swapping the switch is easy, and cheap (Napa keeps a bunch in stock) but getting behind the dash might be a challenge.
  • Daylight Running Light Module (Hamsar?) will also do that when it fails.
  • I had a car that did this and it turned out to be the headlight switch.

On a lot of cars the CB is in the hlight switch.

Had a car that did the same thing. Circuit breaker was in the switch. Switch would get hot and lights would go out for a few seconds and then come back on. This scenario kept repeating. Replacing the switch solved the problem.
  • It could be a loose wire or socket or ground connection, too, besides the things already suggested.
  • Headlights are normally on a circuit breaker. My first guess is a filament issue in one of them. Shorted filament could cause tripping of the circuit breaker.
