Heat pump malfunction

We had a lot of problems with our #1 AC/heat pump heating properly, then in the middle of the night going to cold air (in Yellowstone, no less). It's a Dometic 15,000 btu unit, and seemed solved when a mobile rv guy replaced the solenoid (I think). Unfortunately, it's begun gradually happening again. I get warm air for a while, then it gradually gets less and less warm, until it's cold. I've been told the unit defaults to heat and that it shouldn't be the reversing valve, and short of replacing the unit neither dometic, Newmar, or anyone else seems to be able to solve the problem.

Could it be the "board", whatever that is? Does anyone have any other ideas?

Thank you so much.

  • Isn't Yellowstone CLOSED..:h:h....Dennis

I'm thinking it's just the outside temps. Heat pumps don't work too well below 45 degrees....D
  • How cold is it getting outside?
They are only good to 40 or a little less.

Than your gas furnace should kick in.

Heat Strips and a Heat a Pump. Are two different units.
  • I'm assuming it has the electric heat strips for when the outside temp get's around 48* - 45*s a heat pump just can't produce enough heat, thus the need for backup heat strips come on.
