HELP - How to wire a refer thermostat AND an on/off switch?

Trying to complete my fridge mods (baffles, fans, fan thermostat, and an ON/OFF switch).

How do I wire both the thermostat AND an ON/OFF switch? I know how to wire each independently but for wiring both, I am confused.

I have attached a sketch of what I thought was correct....but then realized when switch was turned on it would send power to thermostat (which may or may not be receiving power at that moment. (122 degree F). I believe this is wrong. What am I missing?

Thanks

  • Start power could be a bit higher.

Fuse is to protect the wire. Probably 10 amps is fine but I did not see the wire size.
  • interesting note...

Fans are rated at 0.26amps each and I installed two= 0.52amps combined

When I used a 1amp fuse it would break.
When I used a 2amp fuse all was good.

Why did 1amp break if fans only draw 0.52 combined?
  • Wired everything according to my last diagram and all is perfect!

Manual operation works great. Now I will turn on refer and see what happens when coils get hot. If all is wired correctly, fans should activate when temps reach 120F.

Update on wiring and refer refer temps to follow.

Heck, summer is just getting started and I have many HOT, HOT days ahead of me (SAD)!
  • I want to have fans turn on thermostatically when thermo reaches set temps.

I also want the ability to turn fans on manually.

Position 1 (AUTO MODE) power is sent to thermo and when it reaches temps thermo will activate fans

    Position #2 (OFF)

Position #3 (MANUAL MODE) is sending power to fans (manually activating fans)

    Questions:

    Will this work correctly?

What happens in manual mode when power is sent to fans AND to theromstat? Or when in auto mode power is sent back to switch?

Here's my second Einstein attempt using a 3 way toggle switch!!

  • If you wire both switches in parallel then each will turn the fans ON.
    Is this what you want?

If you wire both in series then both have to be ON for the fans to run. Either switch will turn them off.
    Which do you want?
  • And located and connected to the input and output wires of the thermostat alone. Not as shone in your diagram coming from the 12v hot terminal and running to junction connecting the fans and the thermostat together.
  • Just thought of a 3 way toggle switch. Will it work?

    left for auto (thermostat)

    center for OFF

    Right for on manually
