I've been happy with the base level Garmin Nuvi I bought seven years ago, for use in the car and the motorhome, but it did not live up to expectations for carrying in my pocket to navigate city streets. In the urban canyon environment it often could not find enough satellites to figure out where I was, and the battery would not last all day. But a smart phone today takes care of that need, using a database of WiFi access points rather than the GPS constellation for location information.
But I use a GPS mostly for "where am I." If you want it for "tell me where to go and how to get there" your need is different, and you will likely have expectations that no single navigation device always successfully satisfies.
I also have a GPSmap recreational GPS receiver that I like even better, been using it about ten years off-road. It needs replacement because it can't handle the more detailed topographic maps now available, not enough storage and newer formats are not compatible. This is a different class of device, actually shows the GPS location and error estimates, rather than using the location estimate to show you where you probably are on a street, road or highway in a map database, which is the location solution usually programmed in an automobile navigation device.
