Another thought. Where going online really helps is learning about event schedules. For example, state and county fairgrounds often have useful RV parking with hookups, almost empty much of the year, but you won't find something during the fair. Many towns have events one or more times a year that fill up everything for a week or for a long weekend. Championship rodeos, bike weeks, auto racing, college and university home football games, etc.
One town in east-central Missouri where I like to stop on the way home from Michigan has a cluster of low-cost motels with huge parking lots. They are empty most of the time, but completely fill up during livestock auctions. The motels are there for that business, thus the big parking.
Another one, you do not want to stop in Canton, Texas during the "First Monday" weekends (which are four days) unless that is why you are going and you've made reservations well in advance, if you want a RV space with hookups.
