Highest hours on their Onan 4KW generator

Once in a while I see some very high hours posted on portable Hondas. Wondering if anyone runs their Onans a lot? Specifically splash lubricated 4KW model common in class C. I'm not a contender-just under 100 hours (sounds fine no oil consumption).

  • Ours has 580 hours on it. I have had the carb and fuel pump replaced at 400 hours or so. The technician recommended going to Rotella 15W-40. I check the oil every day. After an all night run, I may add a few ounces to fill it up.
We use our genset a lot. We just got off a trip to Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee, and both Carolinas. Then bee-lined back to the SE corner of Texas. We stayed at Walmart 4 times on the trip. I use a Genturi exhaust stack when we run it.
Our motorhome is a 2005 Minnie 31C. Love it but not thrilled with the generator location, which is right under my head:)
    Run it and enjoy it!

Last I saw it (last summer) it had 10,400 something hours on it.

A car engine running a car at average speed of 30 MPH for 10,000 hours would push the car 300,000 miles.

Probably like most things automotive, the more they're run and better they're maintained the more hours they'll do. Good to see the engines are sturdy enough to do it.
  • My Onan 4.0KW has 890 hrs and runs like a top. It being an Ex Rental, it got a lot of use and proper maintenance with oil and air filter changes. These things are just about bullet proof if properly taken care of.

It is run monthly under load for at least an hour if I haven't been dry camping.
  • Our 2001 Onan has 1078 on the meter, and last month at an event in hot NC we ran it with the air conditioner on for about 36 hours straight.
  • I have around 450 hours in 3 years. Change the oil 2x a year, and was putting in 15w-40, but the last 2 changes have been with straight 30w and it seems happier but all in all zero issues. I checked the air filter recently and it looked brand new. Leaving for a 9 night trip in a few weeks where only one day will have hook-ups, so I expect to add another 50 hours minimum to the meter.

  • 1100 in one, 600 in the other one. They run like new...
  • I have a whopping 450 but I'm sure many have 10 times that. I make a point to run it for 20 minutes around the first of every month (at least).
  • I have 60 hours on my Onan 4000 which took me 1 year to accomplish. At about 50 It began failing and was diagnosed with a faulty fuel pump and a gunked up carburetor. I had not been using a gas stabilizer. Now it is all repaired (under warrantee) and I am using Sta-bil. Hope to run up many trouble free hours.
