Assuming you have enough metal left surrounding the hole you really would not want to put tape around anything as road spray and debris will likely give the repair a very short life span. You can use some caulk around the new hole and cover the entire area with an appropriate size of sheet metal. Screw the new metal to the existing box and you are done with this repair for the life of the RV. If the area gets hot during operation then be sure to use a heat rated caulking.
